ISO 20022 enables the cross-border payments industry to implement and maintain a messaging standard across both SWIFT and market infrastructures in a coordinated and harmonized way. Through global adoption, ISO 20022 will address friction points, which is crucial to overcoming the challenges faced by an industry inundated with globally fragmented practices.

ISO 20022 is critical for banks because it has the capability of removing some of the biggest challenges in cross-border payments. It captures richer, better structured data and messages, which can prevent false positives in sanction screenings, reduce delays and significantly improve the payment process.

A global adoption of ISO 20022 will increase efficiency of cross-border payments, enhance client processes through better data integration, improve automation for better sanctions screening and AML monitoring, reduce friction to prevent causes of delay, and unlock new opportunities in transaction banking.

At J.P. Morgan, the ISO 20022 readiness strategy includes transparency across the entire organization. Our governance structure, close collaboration with industry experts, and global accountability on how we collectively think about this has shaped our implementation strategy. We recognize that collaboration between clients, partners, and peers is imperative to success.
