What is your best piece of personal finance advice?

My advice is to have a long-term goal in mind, not to be so concerned with day-to-day fluctuations. It's really about understanding that the market is going to do its thing. It's volatile in nature. It's going to go up. It's going to go down. There are a lot of things that you can't control. But what you can control is your commitment to saving, your commitment to investing. Those are the good practices that you can control that in any economy, in any market will prevail.

What is your take on the gig economy?

The gig economy has spread like wildfire and I think for good reason. It is a very liberating exercise, you know,when you can find a way to profit from a passion or leverage a skill set. There are a lot of ways to supplement your nine-to-five paycheck to achieve financial freedom sooner rather than later. And what's awesome about the side gig is that it's on you. You know, no one is deciding what to pay you or saying this is your paycheck, necessarily, that you can grow it, you can evolve it, you could quit it. You know, it's really, it's liberating in that sense. It provides a lot of financial freedom but a lot of also personal freedom.

What inspired you to write your first book?

My first book is called 'You're So Money, Live Rich Even When You're Not.' This book, for me, was a chance to connect with my peers around a very complicated and undiscussed topic, which was money. We all needed the information about how to budget, how to make the most of every paycheck, how to invest properly. And we just -- I was in that camp, too. I didn't feel there were the appropriate role models for us, the appropriate leadership around that. And so I wanted to start that conversation with my generation and the book was an opportunity to do that.

How have you adapted for a digital audience?

I think the important thing to remember when you're trying to build a brand, a personal brand, is to remain prolific in your space. So the book, for me, was the beginning of a conversation with my audience. And I listened to them. I started to learn more about what they needed. I started also to look around me and see how are they consuming information? But I also made sure that I was visible online, where they were going to consume blogs and social media. So it's been my responsibility to be a good listener, to build my brand, to inform me of what the market needs, the audience needs, but also to identify the mediums to communicate best with them.

How do you connect with your audience?

What's helped me connect with my audience continually is just being very honest and transparent, sharing more about my own weaknesses and failures and making my life a little bit more accessible to them. I'm the expert, but I'm also a friend. I'm also somebody who's been there, done that. And I think that the more that I share that aspect of my life, the more trust I build with my audience, the more they come back for more. I mean, it's a tricky terrain, because on the one hand, you want to protect your private life, you know, but also, you want to share what's appropriate. So I'm kind of dancing that line of trying to figure out what's fun and appropriate and what's just TMI, too much.

Do you have any advice for young women?

My advice for women who want to pursue their dreams, they have an idea but they're not really sure will it take off? Is it worth it? Should I do it? Stop second guessing yourself. We're very good as a gender for underestimating our potential. Whatever it is you want to do, just start, find a community of other women and men who can support you, who can lend advice, mentorship, and be OK with failure because that's part of the journey. It's not going to be perfect when you start. It's not going to be perfect when you're in it, and as long as you have the stomach for that and are ready and prepared and excited for that, then I think you're going to have what it takes.
