How to prepare your payment systems

If you use file transmission (Host-to-Host), SWIFT File Act, or Electronic Banking Internet Communication Standard (EBICS), you must update your payment formats to meet these requirements:

  • ISO20022 Version 2 (pain.001.001.02):
Support for this version will be phased out. We recommend moving to ISO 20022 version 3 or 9. The end date for version 2 will be announced soon.
  • ISO20022 Version 3 (pain.001.001.03):
Make sure to include name (<Nm>) and postal address (<PstlAdr>) tags for ordering parties and beneficiaries (creditor, ultimate debtor/creditor if applicable).
  • Rules for debtor agent, creditor agent, forwarding agents, and intermediary agents:
    • Where the bank identification code (BIC) is provided, the country code and town/city name are not required, but if provided may be ignored for processing and routing purposes, as bank processing and routing is based on the BIC alone.
    • Where the member ID is provided, only the country is required which will be converted to the Clearing System ID. The town/city name is not required, but if provided will be treated as surplus information only, as bank processing and routing is based on the member ID/country combination.
    • When BIC or member ID is not provided, then the bank name, the country code, and town/city name are all required.
    • Mandatory tags are indicated in bold for your reference.

  • Whether you use the fully structured or hybrid format, you must include a structured town name and a structured country code (ISO 2-letter format) for each party.
  • If your records do not currently include the town name and country code for these parties, please contact your payees and collect this information as soon as possible.  Acting now will help you stay compliant with the new requirements and avoid any disruptions to your payment processing.

ISO 20022 Version 9 (pain.001.001.09):
This version is currently supported in limited markets. Please reach out to your relationship managers to discuss your options.
