On screen:

This video opens in a studio with exposed brick walls, where a woman in glasses and a patterned dress gestures as she speaks.

Sili Savusa:

If you're doing community development and the community's not involved, it's meaningless. That is hollow work.

[gentle music]

On screen:

Text appears over black:

Text on screen:

'If these walls could talk, what would they say? We sat down with people from the Seattle area to hear their stories.'

On screen:

Identifying text appears beside a woman with short gray hair and glasses:

Text on screen:

'Jan Leonard, Resident, Pride Place.'

Jan Leonard:

I live in the most amazing community. I've never been any place like this.

On screen:

Footage shows Jan laughing as she sits at a table with collage materials. Behind the camera equipment, she smiles with a producer.

Jan Leonard:

Pride Place is full of all kinds of people. Gay people, lesbians, straight allies, and I immediately felt welcome.

On screen:

Now, a brown-haired woman in a blue polo shirt laughs with producers as she makes a collage. Text appears beside her:

Text on screen:

'Lisa Grillo, Senior Program Manager, Substance Use Disorders, DESC - Homeless Service Provider.'

Lisa Grillo:

The world of substance use disorder treatment in the community is a prescribed course of care. It's mandated abstinence. And there was always something that didn't ring right with me about that kind of treatment. I got to DESC and I realized that we can work with anyone, regardless of whether they're using or not, regardless of whether they want to be completely abstinent. They just want help and support, and that's what we do. And that's what makes this work so special in a community setting.

On screen:

She cuts out a dog for her collage, and a producer records a video of Lisa on her phone. Lisa writes the word 'Security' on a red brick. Then, a camera's display screen shows a dark-haired woman in a black dress laughing as she interviews. Text appears beside her:

Text on screen:

'Jamie Lee, Co-Executive Director, SCIDPDA.'

Jamie Lee:

So Beacon Pacific Village is our latest complete ground-up development. It's 160 units of family-size housing.

On screen:

A producer adjusts the camera in front of Jamie, and she chats as she flips through materials at the collage table.

Jamie Lee:

We have a Head Start early learning program run by El Centro de la Raza for all the little kids. And then we also have a senior care facility run by International Community Health Services.

[laughing in background]

On screen:

She laughs as she high-fives the producer, and they make collages.

Jamie Lee:

At our trajectory right now, I think it's just us continuing to steward and support a neighborhood so that in another 50 years, we still have a neighborhood that is true and authentic to itself.

On screen:

The producer holds a clapperboard in front of the woman in the patterned dress.

Crew:

You ready for this?

Sili Savusa:

Wow! It's like official. Sili Savusa, take one.

Crew:

All right.

Sili Savusa:

All right.

On screen:

She snaps the clapperboard, and hands it back to the producer. He adjusts sound equipment, and identifying text appears:

Text on screen:

'Sili Savusa, Board Member, White Center Community Development Association.'

Sili Savusa:

Over 20 years, one of the visions in White Center from the community was we want a place that we can connect to each other as a community.

On screen:

She flips through collage materials, writes the word 'Liberation' on a red brick, and plays a clapping game with the producer.

Sili Savusa:

So the Hub is a community space that families can come to for support-- from health care, social services, activities for young people, kind of a one-stop place where families can mobilize and also come together.

On screen:

She cracks up as she hugs the producer. One by one, the speakers hold up their bricks with words written on them.

Jamie Lee:

If these walls could talk, they would say, "certainty."

Jan Leonard:

They would say, "stimulating."

Sili Savusa:

They would say, "liberation."

Lisa Grillo:

If these walls could talk, they would say, "security, because having a home is the foundation for everything else.

On screen:

The hand-written words appear one by one on a brick wall: Certainty, Stimulating, Liberation, and Security.

Narrator:

J.P. Morgan Community Development Banking understands that the buildings we invest in are more than just four walls. They are you. They are us. They are Seattle.

On screen:

Text appears over an aerial view of Seattle at sunset:

END

As a tech industry hub, Seattle has one of the highest median incomes among major U.S. metropolitan areas.1 But the elevated cost of living leaves some residents behind. A Seattle household would need three full-time minimum-wage jobs to afford a two-bedroom apartment at fair market rent.2

Over the past decade, we’ve invested more than $630 million to support community development organizations dedicated to creating opportunity for everyone who calls Seattle home. Our investments within the city include:

  • $550 million to develop and finance more than 2,500 affordable rental units
  • $80 million in New Markets Tax Credit equity investments in art museums, healthcare centers and other facilities providing essential community services

Our Community Development Banking team works closely with local Seattle community development organizations, delivering customized support for projects that empower communities.

“Seattle is where we live, it’s where we work, so we bring a level of passion to the table. There’s an opportunity for us to take a leadership role because we don’t shy away from challenging projects or big numbers.”

Hear directly from Seattle residents whose lives have been transformed through these investments, and the people leading these life-changing projects.

The walls are talking across the country.
