Overview

Starting November 2026, SWIFT will no longer support unstructured addresses for cross-border payments. Only fully structured or hybrid addresses will be accepted. In addition, some clearing systems across various markets may require hybrid addresses whenever a postal address is provided. At a minimum, hybrid addresses must include Town/City and Country as dedicated data elements. J.P. Morgan Access® will support these hybrid address formats within the online platform. These updates align with SWIFT industry standards and are designed to ensure a smooth transition.

Key Changes

  • Around mid-2026, Access will reflect updated field labels for postal addresses.
  • The City/Town and Country fields will support the hybrid address format with dedicated fields, which will remain optional until the SWIFT regulation takes effect.
  • Address Lines 1 and 2 will allow more characters to accommodate additional address details.

Impact

These changes will affect you if you submit cross-border payments over the SWIFT network or payments routed through clearing systems that require hybrid or fully structured addresses. Impacted systems include Fedwire, CHIPS, SEPA, Swiss Interbank Clearing (SIC), CHAPS-UK, Target2-Euro, and South Africa’s SAMOS. Payments that do not meet the new address requirements may be rejected or delayed, which could impact processing timelines.

Please note that the guidance here does not replace any local legal or regulatory requirements, which can vary by market and payment type. For example, certain locations may already require Town/City and Country details in all payment messages or may have additional address requirements. Please review what is needed for your situation and ensure your payment practices comply with all applicable requirements. For more details on how these changes may affect your domestic and Global ACH payments, please check back or contact your relationship manager.

The key changes will apply across the following payment entry methods:

  • Manual-entry payments
  • Standard Templates
  • Enhanced Templates (Bank Verified Lines)
    • Non-US BVLs will be converted into Standard Templates
    • US BVLs will continue to be supported and will be updated to support hybrid address requirements
  • File Imports

The key changes will apply to the following parties where addresses may be entered:

  • Beneficiary
  • Beneficiary Bank
  • Intermediary Bank
  • By Order Of
  • Debit Party
  • Debit Bank

User recommendations

  • Start reviewing and assessing your address information in payments, templates, and file imports to align with the hybrid address format. Ensure City/Town and Country fields are populated wherever you provide an address.
  • Tip: Use a BIC (Bank Identifier Code) when entering bank addresses to ensure they are properly formatted.
