Addressing the 50-Year Affordable Housing Crisis
Alice Carr, Head of Community Development Banking, says the public and private sector need to come together and think big to solve the growing affordable housing crisis.
In the US today, the demand for affordable housing is simply outpacing the market’s ability to supply it. According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, only 37 affordable rental homes are available for every 100 low-income renter households in the largest 50 metropolitan areas. Federal policy and government investments in housing over the past 30 years have created millions of affordable units, but as Alice Carr writes in the Commercial Observer, we need to think bigger and create sustainable solutions that lead to naturally occurring affordable and workforce housing.
