About

Mettler-Toledo, a global leader in precision instruments, has demonstrated exceptional innovation in transaction management, particularly in its complex operations in China.

With over 35 years of presence in Greater China, Mettler-Toledo operates 17 entities, including manufacturing sites, R&D centers and offices.1 Their Chinese operations contribute significantly to Mettler-Toledo’s sales and global production, underscoring the sophistication required to address its financial challenges.

The challenge

With its large scale and operations, Mettler-Toledo China faced several challenges.

High volumes of manual cross-border and intercompany transactions meant that the team had to deal with cumbersome processes. The need for physical documentation led to inefficiencies and delays in transaction processing.

The Mettler-Toledo China team, serving a domestic market with over half of its products and thousands of local customers, faced challenges due to a manual accounts receivable (AR) reconciliation process. This labor-intensive and time-consuming process significantly hindered operational efficiency.

Additionally, Mettler-Toledo’s global footprint and differing time zones further complicated liquidity operations, resulting in inefficient liquidity management.

The solution

Mettler-Toledo embarked on a transformative journey with the support of J.P. Morgan Payments, marking a pivotal shift in its treasury operations in China.

At the heart of this transformation was the participation in China's Cross-Border Simplification Program (CSP). This strategic move transitioned Mettler-Toledo to a document-free cross-border payment process, eliminating the cumbersome manual documentation that had long hindered transaction efficiency.

Further enhancing this transformation was the introduction of an automated AR reconciliation system through host-to-host integration. By incorporating a Virtual Reference Number (VRN) solution directly into Mettler-Toledo’s ERP system, the company achieved unprecedented levels of accuracy and efficiency, drastically reducing manual effort and freeing up valuable resources.

The highlight of this transformation was the development of a customized liquidity management solution. This innovation granted Mettler-Toledo China the ability to access external funding on a same-day, as-needed basis, optimizing working capital utilization and greatly reducing interest expenses.

Through these intuitive solutions from J.P. Morgan Payments, Mettler-Toledo not only overcame its financial hurdles but set a new standard for treasury excellence in the industry.

The results

These solutions have propelled Mettler-Toledo to new heights of efficiency, achieving remarkable process efficiencies and cost savings.

By eliminating physical documentation, Mettler-Toledo streamlined their cross-border payments operations. Transaction times are reduced from 3-4 days to just 1 day, freeing up a full-time equivalent across the organization. Mettler-Toledo will now also be able to save approximately 10,000 pages of physical documents annually.

Additionally, the VRN-based AR reconciliation system automated processes, enhancing accuracy while reducing manual intervention. With improved funding access, Mettler-Toledo overcame liquidity constraints, saving substantial annual interest fees.

“The results have been transformative. We now have enhanced liquidity management and a new standard for financial efficiency in our operations. J.P. Morgan Payments didn’t just solve our current problems; they created a foundation for future growth.”
