Thriving in uncertain times: Jessica Jesse

The strongest businesses aren’t companies that avoid challenges. They’re the ones with leaders who know how to operate amid uncertainty and overcome adversity. In our “Thriving in uncertain times” series, successful entrepreneurs share how they built resilient businesses, offering their insights on scaling for growth, financial discipline, leadership and more.

In this conversation, Frederick Royall III, Head of Inclusive Banking at J.P. Morgan, spoke with Jessica Jesse, who built a brand that connects fashion and mindfulness as CEO, founder and creative director of BuDhaGirl

Jessica Jesse:

There was no blueprint for BuDhaGirl originally. We were a bit of a disruptor. You know, whoever heard of mindfulness and well-being being married to a fashion product?

Frederick Royall III:

As the founder of BuDhaGirl, we'd love to hear about how you lead from a place of authenticity and the impact that you hope to make on your work. Tell us about your vision for BuDhaGirl. How has it grown or evolved as it's scaled?

Jessica Jesse:

Well, it's really changed. There was no blueprint for BuDhaGirl originally. We were a bit of a disruptor. You know, whoever heard of mindfulness and well-being, being married to a fashion product from its very initial DNA? So we started with our iconic all-weather bangles, but soon because of our content and values, we understood that we could become a lifestyle brand and really expand our offerings.

Frederick Royall III:

Can you share what is the ritual that you would like the consumers of your product to do on a daily basis with the bangles?

Jessica Jesse:

It's very simple, Fred. It's starting your day with setting intentions, and you slip on each bangle thinking of your intentions, and people say, "Well, how do you do that?" I say, "Well, you know, my first two intentions are my children." It's very simple. I mean, you start there. And then, you know, "What do I have to do today?" You know, "I am going to be with Fred today. What are we going to do together?" Those are things that just help you settle your mind. And that's it. You go through your day. In the evening, you take them off and are grateful for the things that happened in your day. They're simple rituals, you know, 30 seconds sometimes, but they stay with you. And they set the tone, not for what you have to do but for what you want to do. We're human beings, we're not human doings.

Frederick Royall III:

How would you describe your leadership style?

Jessica Jesse:

For leadership style, I think I'm easygoing, but I expect results. You know, the expectation is quite high, but I think the way you do that easygoing part is making your team feel comfortable, you know, so that the results flow through the company.

Frederick Royall III:

How have gratitude and intention made you an effective leader?

Jessica Jesse:

It's part of our foundation. I mean, it's part of my personal foundation every day, and it's part of our company. Our team, both in the United States and abroad, they understand that if we do well and we do good, and we're grateful that all is going to be well, you know, that gratitude is the foundation of our work.

Frederick Royall III:

I think that is what makes your company so special. And seeing a leader that leads from a place of empathy, that leads from a place of heart, and understands and practices gratitude, it's truly special, and I commend you for that.
