Thriving in uncertain times: Jessica Jesse

The strongest businesses aren’t companies that avoid challenges. They’re the ones with leaders who know how to operate amid uncertainty and overcome adversity. In our “Thriving in uncertain times” series, successful entrepreneurs share how they built resilient businesses, offering their insights on scaling for growth, financial discipline, leadership and more.

In this conversation, Frederick Royall III, Head of Inclusive Banking at J.P. Morgan, spoke with Jessica Jesse, who built a brand that connects fashion and mindfulness as CEO, founder and creative director of BuDhaGirl

Jessica Jesse:

Well, that's your lifeblood. We respect our clients deeply. We value them. We feel that they're part of our family.

Frederick Royall III:

BuDhaGirl has built a loyal customer base, which is no doubt the result of you putting them at the center of your strategy. Can you share an example of how a customer has influenced your decision-making?

Jessica Jesse:

We never considered children's products. And we started actually fairly early on with mothers saying, "I would love to send my child in the morning with a little intention to school," or just to show them the importance of love and acknowledging each other's presence, right? We thought, well, sure, we can make a little smaller bangle. Why wouldn't we?

Frederick Royall III:

As you built the business, it's clear that listening to your consumer is a hallmark of how you've been able to grow and scale. Why is that so important?

Jessica Jesse:

Well, that's your lifeblood. If you don't listen to your consumer, if you think that you can be isolated and just pop out great ideas, well, that's one thing. But really, you know, we respect our clients deeply. We value them. We feel that they're part of our family, and we would not be on the journey we're on without them.

Frederick Royall III:

How do you think about bold ideas and foster a culture and environment that challenges your employees to create bold ideas?

Jessica Jesse:

You know, one of the strategies is let the youngest person on your team speak first. I think that sometimes great ideas come from that, and even if they're just riffing, speak up. Tell us what you think. The crazier, the better. And tell us why you're thinking that way. It's delightful really to hear some of the ideas, and you know what happens? We laugh a lot. We laugh a great deal, and that's just a joyful moment of the day. And out of that joy comes some really, really interesting initiatives.
