The pharmaceutical supply chain is being rewritten in real time. The pandemic exposed how dependent the U.S. had become on overseas manufacturing for the medicines patients rely on every day — and how quickly efficiency can turn into fragility. Closing that gap is now a priority for boards, policymakers and investors working to secure better healthcare outcomes.
Alex Gorsky has a unique view of that challenge. He spent more than three decades in healthcare, most recently as Chairman and CEO of Johnson & Johnson, guiding one of the world's largest healthcare companies through financial crises, patent cliffs and the pandemic. Today, he works at the intersection of healthcare, technology and global risk on Johnson & Johnson’s board and as a member of the Security and Resiliency Initiative’s External Advisory Council.
In conversation with Jerry Lee, global co-head of Healthcare Investment Banking and global chairman of Investment Banking at J.P. Morgan, he explained what it will take to rebuild resilience across the pharma supply chain, from reshoring critical generics to the role AI will play in discovery and manufacturing.
“We need to not only focus on efficiency and effectiveness, but we also need to think about resiliency and redundancy, particularly when we’re talking about the healthcare of our nation.”
