Visa is enhancing their card-present $0 account verification (a “zero-dollar” check used to confirm a card is valid) to support PIN verification. This change aligns $0 verifications with standard purchase authorizations, so that the card’s bank can receive the PIN, verify it, and return in a PIN result.
On top of this, the enhancement helps support scenarios where you securely store a customer’s card for future merchant-initiated transactions, such as subscriptions or recurring payments.
What you need to do
If you use PIN with $0 account verification for Visa card-present transactions, please confirm that you are able to support:
1. Receiving and handling PIN-related response codes returned on the $0 account verification response:
- 14 – Not in positive PIN verification file
- 55 – PIN incorrect or missing
- 75 – Allowable number of PIN-entry
- 81 – Cryptographic error found in PIN
- 86 – Cannot verify PIN (for example, no PVV)
2. PIN retry behavior, including resending the $0 account verification when appropriate, following standard PIN retry logic.
If you are unsure whether you use $0 account verification PIN today, contact your JPMorganChase representative or your third-party processor/terminal provider for confirmation.
