Adoption of Structured/Hybrid Address for Cross-Border Payments and Reporting Plus (CBPR+)

Effective November 2026, SWIFT and leading Payment Market Infrastructures (PMIs) will require cross-border payment messages to include both a town/city name and country code in postal address fields, as part of the Cross Border Payments and Reporting Plus (CBPR+) initiative. These updates are intended to support compliance efforts and increase automation in payment processing.

What’s changing?

Currently, you must use one of three formats for postal addresses in your payment messages:

  1. Fully unstructured:
This format will be phased out by November 14, 2026. After that, all address fields must use either the structured or hybrid format.
  2. Fully structured:
Address details are separated into specific fields, such as street name, post code, town, and country.
  3. Hybrid:
Combines structured elements (town name and country—both required) with up to two unstructured address lines (each up to 70 characters) for flexibility during the transition.

These requirements apply to cross-border payments sent over the SWIFT network and to payments processed through clearing systems that require hybrid or fully structured addresses.

What you need to do

To avoid disruptions and keep your payments running smoothly, we recommend the following  for payments:

  • Review your current payment initiation systems and data formats.
  • Prepare to support the hybrid postal address format by November 2026 for cross-border payments.
  • Make sure all postal addresses for relevant parties use either the fully structured or hybrid format, including a structured town name and country code (ISO 2-letter format).
  • If you don’t already have town name and country information for your payees, start collecting it now.
  • Update your formats to include the structured town name and country code fields.
