Aumni, a J.P. Morgan company, is collaborating with CUSIP Global Services (CGS) to support expanded coverage, providing standardized identifiers for venture-backed private equity securities.

Private markets have historically lacked standardized identifiers, often relying on manual and inconsistent methods for tracking and referencing securities, and resulting in the use of manual, error-prone solutions. In response to these challenges, Aumni’s collaboration with CGS will bring greater structure and consistency to the assignment of private company identifiers and their use in downstream operations.

The CUSIP is a nine-character alphanumeric security identifier that captures the unique attributes of issuers and their financial instruments throughout the U.S. and Canada. Widely recognized as a trusted standard in financial markets, the CUSIP is a foundational building block that allows for efficient trading, clearing and settlement across dozens of asset classes. Key benefits for clients will include:

  • Better transparency for fund managers, administrators and LPs.
  • Improved decision-making through consistent data references.
  • Streamlined operational processes across fund structures.
  • Reduced errors and inefficiencies that result from manual or inconsistent data.

Setting a new standard

“This is a foundational step toward enabling consistent, structured data in private markets,” said Alex Woodgate, Head of Corporate Development and Data Solutions at Aumni. “Standardized identifiers can simplify reporting, enable operational efficiencies and support more connected workflows for GPs, LPs  and fund administrators.”

“This collaboration marks a significant step forward in enabling the same level of efficiency in private markets that public markets have enjoyed for decades,” said Scott Preiss, Senior Vice President and Global Head at CGS. “By standardizing private company identifiers, we are paving the way for more streamlined operations and better decision-making for all market participants, which we feel is becoming ever more important as these alternative asset classes continue to grow.”

Through Aumni’s expertise in private market data structuring and CGS's Private CUSIP assignment capabilities, customers will benefit from rich company- and security-level metadata to support portfolio management.
