About Barney

Barney Cohen is a Managing Director and Wealth Partner with J.P. Morgan Wealth Management. He draws on his deep capital markets experience to provide advisory guidance that addresses the financial complexities of high-net-worth individuals, family offices and institutional organizations.

Barney employs a disciplined process to help grow and preserve significant assets. His wealth management strategies consider both sides of the balance sheet to target the personalized needs of each individual. Barney’s proficiencies extend beyond asset management, and he helps organize the important elements of each client’s financial life into a single, integrated plan—M&A requirements, executive services, trust and estate planning, lending. He is committed to managing multigenerational relationships and placing clients first.

As a member of J.P. Morgan Wealth Management’ Portfolio Manager Program, Barney stands among a select group of advisors who undergo a screening process to manage discretionary portfolios, and are subject to ongoing quantitative and qualitative review. This exacting attention to detail enables him to actively manage assets on behalf of individual clients.

Barney is a graduate of the University of California, Riverside, and holds a B.S. in Economics. He attended graduate school at Colorado State University, where he participated in its master’s program in Economics on a full academic scholarship.

Originally planning to work in academia as an economics professor, Barney shifted his focus to finance and leverages his educational background to help clients understand all elements of their portfolios. He is passionate about the markets and enjoys exceptional exposure to a broad spectrum of innovative, actionable ideas.

With over 25 years of wealth management experience, Barney began his career at Merrill Lynch and Piper Jaffray before joining J.P. Morgan predecessor firm in 2006. There, he became a founding partner of the Seattle Branch. Barney is pleased to tap the firm’s robust investment platform, opportunistic ideas and award-winning research team for the benefit of his clients.

Barney lives in West Seattle with his wife, Rachelle, and their two children, Zoe and Sam. In his spare time, he can be found outdoors, and is a ski mountaineer and a ski designer for several major manufacturers. Barney and his family travel the Pacific Northwest to pursue his children’s ski racing adventures. He is also an avid Puget Sound fisherman and recently won the Seattle Yacht Club’s coveted Erikson Trophy for Fisherman of the Year.

Committed to giving back, Barney plays an influential role in his community and is an active participant in many worthy causes:

  • Executive board, board member and treasurer for Westside School
  • Board member of CMAC for its Alpine Ski Team
  • Licensed Alpine Ski Race Official; holds the highest designation—Chief of Race
  • Previous board and executive board member for Jewish Family Service of Western Washington, one of the largest food banks and health & human services providers in Washington State
