LONDON: Investment trusts riding high in J.P. Morgan platform bestseller list - Six of December’s top 10 funds closed-ended; US still top choice overall

Jan 17, 2013

London, 17 January 2013: The latest monthly sales figures from J.P. Morgan Asset Management's online investment platform, WealthManager+, show more than half of the top 10 funds based on December 2012 net inflows were investment trusts. However, US equities remained the most popular choice both in December and for 2012 as a whole.

The platform offers funds and investment trusts from J.P. Morgan Asset Management (JPMAM) and more than 25 external managers, which investors can hold in an Investment Account, Individual Savings Account (ISA), Junior ISA or Self Invested Personal Pension (SIPP).

As in the previous month, the three overall top-selling funds were JPM US, Allianz Brazil and JPM US Smaller Companies. However, in a marked change from November when just two investment trusts made the overall top 10, in December six J.P. Morgan-managed trusts made the list, with the most popular being the UK small- and mid-cap income specialist Mercantile Investment Trust.

Looking at the top 10 third-party funds, another investment trust - Fidelity China Special Situations – also made the list. December's third-party fund chart bore little resemblance to November's, with only Allianz Brazil and Invesco Perpetual European High Yield still in the top 10. Income remained a popular choice but the funds suggested a move up the risk spectrum, with new entrants to the top 10 including Henderson Asian Dividend Income and Schroder Asian Income in place of the Invesco Perpetual Income and High Income funds.

The top-selling funds overall on the platform in 2012 encapsulate all these themes, with US and Latin American funds, income and investment trusts all well represented.

Keith Evins, Head of UK Funds Marketing at J.P. Morgan Asset Management, said: "Looking across 2012, it is clear that the private investors who use our J.P. Morgan WealthManager+ platform have not been sticking to the 'safe' options. The preponderance of Asian, Latin American and global emerging markets funds suggests investors are willing to take on a bit more risk in the search for above-inflation returns, and this is also borne out in the shorter term figures."
