U.S. EQUITY
  • U.S. equities saw an increase of 3.8% in the S&P 500 index for the month of October, driven by a high percentage of companies exceeding earnings expectations and strong retail sales increases.
  • Growth stocks were the best performer this month, with the Russell 1000 Growth Index posting a 4.8% gain.
FIXED INCOME
  • The Barclays Aggregate Index gained 0.4% in October and is up 8.3% YTD. Interest rates remain at low levels amid continued concerns about deflation.
  • High Yield increased by 2.9% and remains the top performer with respect to YTD return, up 14.6% since the beginning of the year.
INTERNATIONAL EQUITY
  • The MSCI EAFE Index was up 3.6% in October. Europe continues to deal with sovereign debt issues from Ireland, Portugal, and Greece.
  • Emerging Markets posted positive returns this month as the MSCI Emerging Markets Index increased 2.9%, boosting the YTD return to 14.3%.
REAL ESTATE AND OTHER
  • The MSCI U.S. REIT index was up 4.8% in October, with a YTD return of 25.3%.
  • U.S. GDP increased by 2% in the third quarter, still below the trend rate of 2.5% to 3%. The unemployment rate, at 9.6%, has been essentially unchanged since May.
