"Some of the UK's most successful businesses have been set up or run by families, and many of our best-known brands and products have been developed by them. Family businesses have many excellent qualities from which other businesses can learn. In particular, they tend to take a long-term view: 60% of family companies have been established for more than 30 years compared with half the figure for non-family companies."
Nigel Griffiths
Minister for Enterprise
In 2003 the Family Business Honours programme was set up in association with London Business School and The Institute for Family Business (UK), to celebrate the contribution that family owned businesses play in the economy of the UK, and indeed, of Europe.
Family businesses face unique challenges revolving around family ownership, management and succession that need to be better understood to be more widely overcome.
Underpinning the Family Business Honours is the belief that successful family businesses are usually those that have found a way to balance the demands of the family, the business, and the community.
The honours recognise outstanding achievement in three areas: Family governance, Business Success, and Social Responsibility.
