J.P. Morgan's presence in Korea dates back to 1967, when Chase Manhattan Bank became the first foreign bank to enter the market. Since then, it has expanded its business to include brokerage services and investment banking. Today, employees in the Seoul office offer an array of wholesale financial services in Investment Banking, Asset Management, and Treasury & Securities Services through three legal entities; J.P. Morgan Securities (Far East) Limited, Seoul Branch, JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A., Seoul Branch, and JPMorgan Asset Management (Korea) Company Limited. The operations are located in J.P. Morgan Plaza, in the central business district, surrounded by the historic Deoksu Palace, Baejae Park and the Seoul Museum of Art.
J.P. Morgan is a leading foreign house for futures and options, and is one of the top three foreign houses for foreign exchange trading in terms of trading volume and one of only three foreign investment banks with a Korean government bond primary dealership.
Major milestones in the firm's history in Korea:
- 1967: Chase Manhattan Bank (J.P. Morgan Chase's predecessor) establishes its local office as the first foreign bank to enter the market
- 1991: J.P. Morgan Securities opens its Seoul branch
- 1995: Korean government approves J.P. Morgan Securities as the first foreign brokerage house
- 1996: J.P. Morgan Futures is established
- 2007: J.P. Morgan Asset Management receives license and starts business
- 2008: J.P. Morgan Securities receives Equity Derivatives OTC license
- 2010: J.P. Morgan Futures merges with J.P. Morgan Securities Seoul Branch; J.P. Morgan Metals is established
- 2011: J.P. Morgan Metals merges with J.P. Morgan Securities Seoul Branch
