Like many philanthropists, your charitable giving may start simply because you want to help solve immediate needs in your community. Some give in response to tragedies or natural disasters. Others give to charities championed by friends and respected civic leaders.
But the effectiveness of such “checkbook philanthropy”—as this type of giving is often called—can be difficult to gauge, especially if your donations are small relative to the causes being supported.
While transitioning to a more organized approach may seem daunting, you can start simply by answering a few basic questions. In this way, you may be better equipped to handle future requests and stay informed.
